Advanced Imaging for Wisdom Teeth Management
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMSs) can use advanced imaging technology to determine the best course of action for wisdom teeth management. These tools allow an OMS to visualize the wisdom teeth (also called third molars) and surrounding structures in detail to diagnose and plan treatment. For example, these images can help show if teeth are impacted, if there is enough room for them to erupt or if the teeth are close to nerves or sinuses.
The following are advanced imaging tools an OMS might use:
Cone-beam Computed Tomography
Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a specialized digital imaging technique that creates 3D images of the teeth, jaws and surrounding structures. The CBCT machine rotates around the patient’s head and provides high-resolution images of the wisdom teeth and adjacent structures such as nerves, sinuses and neighboring teeth. The image also identifies unusual contours of the jaws and aberrant positioning of the wisdom teeth that may affect the surgical approach. With this valuable information, the OMS can accurately assess case complexity, plan treatment and minimize the risk of complications.
Panoramic X-ray
A panoramic radiograph provides a comprehensive view of the entire mouth, including the wisdom teeth, jaws and adjacent structures. These 2D images, created in a machine similar to the CBCT, capture the skeletal structures in one detailed image. An OMS can assess the number, position, angle, condition and stage of eruption of wisdom teeth using panoramic X-rays. Although this type of X-ray does not provide the same level of detail as a CBCT scan, it is still valuable for as an initial assessment and for treatment planning.
X-rays that are normally taken by your dentist during checkups and cleanings can diagnose cavities and gum disease of your wisdom teeth, however they often are not sufficient to assess teeth that are impacted. Digital technology is widely used over traditional film due to less radiation exposure, less time to generate the image, and improved image quality from software enhancements.
3D Imaging and Specialized Analysis Software
In some cases, an OMS may use special software to further analyze and visualize image data acquired by CBCT or other 3D imaging techniques. The software enables precise measurements, virtual treatment planning and simulation. This helps determine the best approach for wisdom tooth extraction and minimizes possible complications.
Benefits of Advanced Imaging
Advanced imaging technology offers several benefits for the management of wisdom teeth, including:
- Accurate diagnosis: Detailed 3D images can help OMSs accurately diagnose wisdom tooth-related issues, including the degree of impaction, proximity to nerves and sinuses, and presence of cysts or infection associated with the teeth.
- Treatment plan: Advanced imaging enables OMSs to craft a comprehensive and customized surgical approach for each patient by visualizing the exact position, angle and relationship of the wisdom tooth to surrounding structures.
- Minimize complications: Advanced imaging allows OMSs to identify potential complications such as proximity to nerves or sinus involvement before the procedure. This information can help them take necessary precautions to minimize risk and improve the outcome of surgery.
- Patient education: Advanced imaging enables OMSs to better explain conditions and treatment plans. Patients can see the impacted wisdom teeth and the neighboring structures to gain a better understanding of the risks and benefits so they can make informed decisions and feel more confident about the recommended treatments.
