Why Choose an OMS

Preparing for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

If you are scheduled to have oral and maxillofacial surgery, proper preparation will contribute to a smooth procedure and successful outcome.

Consultation and Evaluation

Before surgery, you will have a consultation with your oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS). Your OMS will assess your specific condition and perform a thorough examination of the area of concern to determine the best approach for surgery. The OMS will then discuss the surgical procedure and address any concerns or questions you may have.

Hygiene Before Surgery

Good body and oral hygiene is essential when preparing for surgery. For intraoral procedures, brushing your teeth gently and thoroughly twice a day and flossing can help remove plaque and bacteria. Your OMS may recommend using an antibacterial mouthwash to reduce the risk of infection at the surgical site. For facial procedures, showering, washing your hair and avoiding excessive makeup may be recommended.

Administration of Medication

Tell your OMS about any medications or supplements you take, as they may cause unwanted reactions when mixed with anesthesia or prescribed postoperative medications. You will be given specific instructions before your surgery, which may include skipping your medication or taking a different medication. It is important to follow these instructions carefully to ensure your safety during the procedure.

Dietary Restrictions

Your OMS may recommend dietary restrictions before surgery, such as fasting, for your upcoming appointment. This is to ensure that the stomach is empty during surgery and to reduce the risk of complications with anesthesia.

Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking can interfere with healing and increase the risk of complications, and alcohol can interact with anesthetics and other drugs. Consult with your OMS about how long you should stop smoking and drinking alcohol before your surgery.

Anxiety and Pain Medications

If you have anxiety or pain prior to surgery, your OMS may prescribe medications to reduce these symptoms. Adhere to the dosage and timing instructions prescribed by your OMS.

Instructions Before Surgery

Your OMS will provide detailed preoperative instructions, which may include showering, washing your face and brushing your teeth before surgery, wearing comfortable clothing, removing artificial nails, and not wearing makeup or jewelry on the day of surgery. Follow these instructions carefully to ensure a safe and smooth surgical procedure. Transport and Support
Arrange for someone to accompany you to your surgery appointment, drive you home, and stay with you for 24 hours Anesthesia and surgery can make you sleepy and affect your ability to drive. Additionally, having a companion can provide reassurance and support.

Ahead of your surgery, communicate openly with your OMS and their team. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact them for guidance.
