Surgical Uprighting
Surgical uprighting is a surgery performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) to reposition impacted permanent molars. This procedure usually is recommended when orthodontic treatment alone is not sufficient to correct the teeth. OMSs can help reposition the unerupted molars into an optimized vertical position in the socket so it works harmoniously with the patient’s bite.
Is Uprighting Surgery Right for Me?
Before undergoing corrective uprighting surgery, you will have a consultation with an OMS. During this session, the doctor will use X-rays, 3D scans, or other imaging techniques to assess the position of the impacted teeth to determine the best approach for your particular case.
Is Anesthesia Used?
Surgical uprighting is performed under local anesthesia to ensure comfort, which numbs the treatment area. In some cases, general anesthesia may be used, especially if multiple teeth are affected.
What Does Surgical Uprighting Entail?
Your OMS will expose the molar and upright it so it is level with the adjacent molars and works with your occlusion (bite). Sometimes, third molars (also known as wisdom teeth) must be removed to allow space for proper uprighting and positioning. In this case, the extraction and uprighting are often combined into the same procedure.
Once the tooth is upright, it might require stabilization with orthodontic wire and bonding to ensure the tooth remains in the proper position.
What Happens After Surgery?
After surgical uprighting, it will take time to heal and stabilize the teeth in their new positions. Your OMS will provide postoperative instructions for proper care, including oral hygiene practices and dietary recommendations. Your OMS also will monitor progress and schedule follow-up appointments to make any necessary adjustments.
Benefits of Surgical Uprighting
- Improved bite function and oral health: Correcting impacted molars can improve how your upper and lower jaws come together and function. When molars are left impacted, they can damage adjacent teeth as well. By exposing and properly positioning the molars, surgical uprighting can make it easier to maintain oral hygiene and chew food.
- Improved esthetics: Surgical uprighting molars can make subsequent orthodontic treatment more effective and efficient, improving the appearance of your smile.
If you are considering surgical uprighting for molars, talk to an experienced OMS who can evaluate your specific case and recommend the best treatment plan.
